 PHOENIX - October 10, 2017 - This fall, 28 Brophy seniors earned some level of National Merit recognition and nine seniors were named National Hispanic Scholars. Students qualify for National Merit recognition through their scores on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT), with National Hispanic Scholars chosen by their PSAT scores and overall academic record.
 
Eleven seniors were named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists and 17 seniors were named National Merit Commended Scholars. Semifinalists are Nicholas Chang, Brett Cohen, Alex Fessler, Mark Haak, Steven Hall, Kyle Harrison, Bert Odinet, Connor Park, Blaise Schaefer, Luke Tanner and Jack Woodrow. Commended Scholars are Reed Abbajay, Gage Burkes, Jett Curley, Samuel Fallon, Peter Halligan, Kaleb Lucero, James Murphy, Michael Murphy, Michael Niebling, Kurtis Ottman, William Ramsey IV, Herman Sanghera, Max Schwarz, Krishna Sinha, Ryan Slawson, Shikhar Srivastava and Matthew Zacher.
 
Seniors honored as National Hispanic Scholars are Manny Alemany, Brett Cohen, Kaleb Lucero, Nathan Martinez Rubio, Roberto Peralta, Michael Richmann, José Roman, Jack Spitza and Troy Weinstein.
 
Brophy President, Adria Renke, commented, “Our students work very hard to become the intellectually competent graduates at graduation that, as a Jesuit school, we nurture, encourage, and expect.”
 
Approximately 1.6 million students from more than 22,000 high schools entered the National Merit Scholarship competition by virtue of taking the PSAT/NMSQT their junior year with about 50,000 students nationally earning Semifinalist or Commended status.
 
The 2017 results continue to support Brophy’s reputation as an academic powerhouse. Last year, Brophy had 33 students who earned some level of National Merit recognition, with 20 National Merit Commended Scholars and 13 National Merit Semifinalists, all who went on to become National Merit Finalists.
