Brophy Announces New Board Chair for 2017-2018

Father John P. McGarry, SJ, rector of the Jesuit Community of the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, will take over as chairman of Brophy’s Board of Trustees for the 2017-2018 school year. Mr. John Strittmatter, chairman of Ryan Companies’ Southwest Region, will step down as Board president after serving as a trustee for 13 years.

Father McGarry is no stranger to Brophy, having served as a teacher and as director of Campus Ministry from 1986-1989. He spent time at Loyola High School, Los Angeles, and at Jesuit High School, Sacramento, where he served as principal from 1998-2005. In 2005, he was named Provincial of the California Province of the Society of Jesus, supervising approximately 375 Jesuits involved in three universities, eight high schools, a Nativity school, 10 parishes, six social ministries, three retreat centers, as well as other educational, pastoral, and social ministries. After six years as Provincial, Fr. McGarry was appointed by the Superior General of the Society of Jesus to serve as rector of the Jesuit Community of the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, Berkeley.

Before joining the Board as a trustee, Mr. Strittmatter served as a regent from 2001-2003. He joined the Board in 2004, eventually taking the reins as Board president. He is the father of two Brophy graduates, Michael ’05 and Daniel ’08.

Brophy President, Adria Renke, expressed her gratitude for Strittmatter’s leadership, “John has dedicated the better part of two decades to serving Brophy as a regent and a trustee. His contributions are immeasurable and our gratitude immense. He truly models the Jesuit precept of a Man for Others.”

President Renke also welcomed McGarry. “This is a man who knows, not only how Jesuit high schools run generally, but thanks to his presence here in past years, he knows our school specifically. I’m thrilled to have his acumen and leadership experience working for Brophy as he guides the Board of Trustees during the coming school year.”
