Football’s Chaz Carson to Play at the University of Chicago

Brophy senior offensive lineman Chaz Carson committed to the NCAA Division III University of Chicago in December. He will celebrate his decision at the Brophy Football Signing Day celebration on Feb. 7.

“I am excited,” said Carson. “The University of Chicago fits for me. I am a Boy Scout and the school fits the Scout oath about staying physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. It hits all of those as a good academic school that will keep me strong in the sport I love. It will also keep me with a brotherhood I love.”

The University of Chicago is coached by Todd Gilcrest, Jr., who enters his third season in 2024, and Offensive Line coach Max Andrews.

“Coach Andrews is one of the best position coaches I met,” said Carson. “He is nice and outgoing. We think alike in technique and looking at an individual play and how to improve each time. I love the energy of all the coaches.”

Carson, who plans to study business and pre-law on a Law School track,  was a Sports360AZ 2023 All-Academic first-team honoree this season.

“I did not think about playing in college until the end of my sophomore year,” recalled Carson. “I played football because it was what I did in middle school. I was more of a basketball player. After playing for two years and enjoying the brotherhood of my team, it was something I wanted to continue in college.”

Carson was a starter on Brophy’s AIA 6A Conference semifinal team in 2023, earning second-team selection on the Central Region offensive team. He was a three-year letter winner who also earned Northeast Valley All-Region Honorable Mention selection in 2022.

“No one in our program has made the progress that Chaz Carson has from the day he stepped on our campus to now,” said Jewell. “And that has come from a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication from Chaz. No one has worked as hard as Chaz has since his freshmen year. He turned into a two-year starter and two-time all-region player and will go down in our record books as one of the strongest players in our program.”

He has also been a member of the National Honor Society, the Chess team, and the Amateur Chess Club. He won the AIA award for biggest upset.

But his best memories came on the field.

“My favorite memory was going to the Honor Bowl and winning,” said Carson. “It was personal for me. I had a family issue during that time so I wanted to win one last time for a family member. It was a nice moment.”
Carson was also named the 2023 Homecoming King at the Desert Vista game.

“It was awesome,” said Carson of the selection by his classmates. “It was a great moment to be announced and have the whole team cheering for me.”

He will participate in the Brophy Football Signing Day Celebration on February 8 at 7:15 p.m. in the Robson Gymnasium.
