Three Brophy Football Players Make Commitments Official

Three Brophy football players made their Division I commitments official on Wednesday on National Signing Day including Billy Eastep (Yale University), Devan Kennedy (University of Iowa), and Mardale Rowe (Fordham University). Chaz Carson has committed to the University of Chicago and will participate in Brophy’s Signing Day celebration on Feb. 7.

Kennedy was a Central Region second-team selection for the Broncos. He recorded 49 tackles (39 solo) on the season with 8.5 tackles for loss including 4.5 sacks with a team-best 18 hurries.

“Devan’s transformation on and off the field over the last year and a half is unbelievable,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “I don’t think in all my years of coaching I have seen a kid progress like Devan has. From 190 pounds and never getting in a three-point stance to 250 pounds and signing with Iowa, it’s just an incredible story. And he has so much more room to grow. I can’t wait to see him continue on his football journey.”

Rowe was an AIA 6A All-Conference and Central Region first-team selection, as well as an Arizona Republic All-Arizona honorable mention choice. He recorded 59 tackles (35 solo) with a team-best 19.5 tackles for loss with 6.5 sacks and 12 hurries. He finished his career as the all-time career sack (18) and tackles for loss (52.5) in school history.

“Mardale Rowe will go down as one of the top defensive linemen in Brophy history,” said Jewell. “He broke our all-time sack and TFL record. He’s been a three-year starter and three-time all-region player and was a disruptive force as a senior, earning all-state honors. The quality of football and education that Mardale will receive at Fordham is second to no one. I am very proud of Mardale!”

Eastep was a Central Region second-team selection on defense. He recorded 32 tackles (30 solos) with two tackles for loss, two interceptions, and six passes defended.

“Yale is getting a truly special young man,” said Jewell. “A great football player, a great lacrosse player, a great kid who was one of our team captains. Billy set a goal of playing in the Ivy League as a sophomore and I am so happy to see him accomplish that goal. His versatility, intelligence, and physicality are going to lead to him having a very successful career at Yale.”

Carson was a second-team selection on the Central Region offensive team.

“No one in our program has made the progress that Chaz Carson has from the day he stepped on our campus to now,” said Jewell. “And that has come from a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication from Chaz. No one has worked as hard as Chaz has since his freshman year. He turned into a two-year starter and two-time all-region player and will go down in our record books as one of the strongest players in our program.”

The recruiting process continues for several additional players looking to play at the next level and making their commitments official during the second NCAA signing period starting on Feb. 7. Ovrall, 24 s
