Get to Know: Diving's Sean Kennedy

Sean Kennedy is a two-sport standout for the Broncos in both diving and wrestling. He finished 24th at the AIA State Championships in diving. He advanced to the state wrestling tournament, earned All-Premier Region honors, and went 31-19 on the season in wrestling. He started diving as a sophomore and been a four-year participant in wrestling. He finished 10th at the Brophy/Xavier Invitational last week. A fun fact is he can solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than 10 seconds.

What prompted you to start diving as a sophomore?
“My Dad (Jim ‘80) was a diver as a Brophy student and at Arizona State. I knew I always wanted to try it. I played freshman football which is the reason I did not start diving my first year. I really did not like football so I switched over and I love it.”

What have you enjoyed about participating in Diving and getting better each season?
“It is fun to get better and the team is great. I participated in club diving in the offseason to improve as well. I thing I love about it is the team.”

What did you learn from your experience at the State Meet last season?
“I did not know what to expect. It was hard. You have to do well in the invitationals. I did not know what to expect last so I think I will be that much better with that experience.”

What is your favorite dive?
“My favorite dive is a front two and a half.”

What is your most difficult?
“Front one and a half with a full twist.”

What have you learned from Coach Barbara this year?
“She is really great technically with all the little details she will fix. It is what I need.”

How do your two sports work together?
“I think wrestling helps diving a lot more. You are doing a lot of tumbling and moving your body in different ways. It transfers over to diving with the techniques and strength.”

What are your college goals at this point?
“My target school is the Naval Academy. I would like to dive there.”

Do you set score goals for invitationals?
“I try to focus on doing each dive the best I can and they will add up to my high score.”

What was the Brophy experience with your brother (Ryan ‘23)?
“He did not do any of the same sports. It was cool to have him here and see him around school.”
