Swimming and Diving Wins Brophy/Xavier Invitational

The Brophy swimming and diving team won the Brophy/Xavier Invitational on Saturday at the Reese Aquatic Center, scoring 427 points after winning three events and recording nine Top-3 finishes.

“Right now we are just trying to qualify for states,” said Head Coach Daren Brubaker. “We have had three dual meets so this was our first invitational. We are excited to have won it.”

Senior Teddy Neilson won two events individually, taking the 200-yard individual medley in 1:56.21 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.21. Both times were AIA State Championship automatic qualifiers. He also contributed to the opening state qualifying 200-yard medley relay win with teammates Jackson Douglas, Finn Conley, and Aiden Kelly.

The 200-yard freestyle relay was second overall with Thomas McCauley, Mark Heffern, Frank Sunderhaus, and Tristan Ooudman in 1:31.14.

Freshman Finn Conley was third in the 200-yard freestyle, while Nico Wood touched third in the 200-yard individual medley behind Neilson, and Mark Heffern was third in the 100-yard butterfly (52.77). Ashton Joswiak was second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.22) as the Broncos took four of the top six places. Patrick Dunn was third.

“I was surprised by my sprinters,” said Brubaker. “Usually they do really well at the end of the season. A lot of guys were trying to break barriers. This week we will work on relay exchanges and working on getting more cuts in.”

Brophy returns to the pool to host Mountain View on Thursday.
