Football Wins Big over Sunnsylope in Rivalry Return

The Brophy football team defeated Sunnyslope on Friday 49-7 at Central High School as quarterback Charlie McGinnis threw for three touchdowns and an efficient 22-for-26 for 210 yards. He also rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown. Junior Christian Camarata, senior Ryan de Koning, and sophomore Harrison Chambers caught his touchdowns. Senior Eddie Martinez-Estrada and junior Carlos Estrada, who led the team with 10 rushes for 71 yards, added rushing scores. It was the first meeting between the schools since 1983.

“We accomplished what we wanted to do,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “Our No. 1 goal was to contain No. 1 - Luke Maga. He is a good football player. We did a good job with it. Our defense did a great job containing a very good football player.”

Moga was held to 7-for-16 passing for 72 yards and (-1) yard rushing on seven attempts.

“Our offensive line did a nice job and we were able to run the ball and protect the quarterback,” said Jewell, whose team rushed for 191 yards and completed 82 percent of its passes.

Senior Jax Ryan had seven catches for 50 yards in the game, while Camarata and senior Jacob Buggie each grabbed three balls.

Brophy (2-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and led by 28 at one point in the first half. Estrada scored to put Brophy ahead 7-0 before junior Cree Thomas had a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0. McGinnis found DeKoning in the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

Brophy led 28-7 at the half and quickly built the lead in the second half, starting a running block late in the third quarter.

Brophy plays its third home game on Thursday against Chaparral at 7 p.m. at Central High School.
