Football Drops Heartbreaker in Season Opener

The Brophy College Prep football team lost to Williams Field 35-34 on a heartbreaker in the final seconds on Friday in the season opener at Ray Laing Field. Quarterback Charlie McGinnis went 17-for-31 for 218 yards and three passing touchdowns to tie a career-high and added one rushing TD. Carlos Estrada rushed for 104 yards on 20 carries for 5.2 yards per carry.

“Our team battled and we lost a heartbreaker,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “We have some areas and situations we need to fix but we did a lot of good things. We are going to come back next week ready to battle in our trip to San Diego.”

McGinnis connected with eight different receivers in the contest and three players for touchdowns including senior Jacob Buggie, senior Ryan de Koning, and junior Nassim Isaac. The DeKoning strike was for 70 yards, and Christian Camarata had a game-high four catches.

Alex Salome and Dominic Mitchell each had nine tackles in the contest. Connor Furey connected on both his field goal attempts with a long of 34 yards and Eddie Jetton was 3-for-3 on PAT attempts.

Brophy trailed 14-13 at the half after Isaac converted one drive for points but the Broncos had to settle for two field goals. The Broncos built a 34-20 lead in the fourth quarter as McGinnis found de Koning on the 70-yard deep ball. But two late scores and a 2-point conversion erased the potential win.

The next game is at Cathedral Catholic in San Diego on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
