Don Maloney Named the Head Brophy Varsity Hockey Coach 

Don Maloney will take over the Head Coach duties this fall for the Brophy varsity hockey program, Athletic Director Josh Garcia announced. He replaces John Allen who will transition to program director while remaining an assistant coach with the Broncos.
 
Don started coaching in 2016-17 as a volunteer coach with Coach John Allen’s Junior Coyotes Club Team. He was a volunteer coach with Brophy on their State Championship Team in 2022 and became an Assistant Coach for the 2023 season.
 
Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., Maloney did not start playing hockey until his sophomore year at St Peter’s Boys High School on Staten Island, New York in 1983-1984. His team won the Junior Varsity Catholic High School Championship and Don was awarded as the Most Improved Player. He played Varsity in both his junior and senior years becoming an All-City 2nd Team All-Star his senior year while his team made it to the championship game.
 
Don filled his summers in 1986-87 working at Hockey Schools in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Those summers gave him great exposure to both coaching and playing. Following High School Don played Junior B Hockey for the New York Junior Islanders. In 1987-1988 Don played college hockey at the S.U.N.Y. College at Brockport.
 
Don joined the United States Marines in 1988 and served in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He finished playing hockey at Arizona State University in 1991-92 where he met and played with Coach John Allen. He was named an assistant captain in his senior year.
 
Don became a police officer and is currently a Sergeant in the Phoenix Police Department. He has 25 years of service and has played on the department’s hockey team. He and his wife, Allison, have two daughters: Ava, a sophomore at ASU, and Lia, a junior at Arcadia High School. His favorite hobby is skating and is an avid sports fan.
