Lacrosse Advances to Arizona State Championship on Friday

The Brophy lacrosse team advanced to the Arizona Lacrosse League State Championship game with an 11-5 victory over Notre Dame Prep. Junior Laird Miller and sophomore Joshua Buse each scored four times and junior Erik Volfson added three goals in the victory.

“As a collective unit offensively, I don’t think we played our best game but we rose to the occasion and put some balls at the back of the net,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “Anytime you hold a team to five for a game and three at halftime that is spectacular.”

Junior Deion James had eight ground balls and 13 face-off wins. Freshman Ryan Pietzmeier had 10 saves in goal to secure the victory. Sophomore Harrison Yu added five ground balls and Buse and junior Connor Rassas each added four.

“We needed big moments from Deion James in the faceoff and Ryan Peitzmeier in goal,” said Harbeson. “Quite frankly they won us that game. They played phenomenally.”

Brophy plays in the championship on Friday at Desert Vista at 7:30 p.m. against Perry, who posted a 16-5 victory against Boulder Creek.

“The biggest thing is we get three more days together,” said Harbeson. “It is a special group that has worked really hard to come together and have the opportunity to compete for a state championship.”

Brophy (16-6) is making its third consecutive state championship appearance. The Broncos are seeking their second consecutive title and the seventh in school history (2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2022).
