Basketball Falls to Notre Dame (Calif.) in Hoophall West Opener

Senior Arman Madi scored a team-best and game-high tying 28 points but Brophy fell to Notre Dame (Calif.) out of Sherman Oaks 72-61 in the Hoophall West Tournament at Chaparral High School.

“It was a great opportunity for us to learn there is a huge importance in the type of energy we bring ourselves,” said Head Coach Matt  Hooten. “We have to sometimes manufacture energy. We have played with some great crowds over the last couple of games. Tonight it was different with the earlier start and that energy in the gym is something we have to create.”

Notre Dame built a 15-point first-half lead helped by a solid second quarter out-scoring the Broncos 14-6 as Brophy shot just 18 percent for the quarter. But Brophy responded in the second half with improved shooting from the field, eventually cutting the deficit to six points.

"I was pleased with the way we came out in the second half,” said Hooten. “We played with more energy and we were able to get some stops and get some shots. We closed it to six points and had a chance to make it a game late.”

Brophy (3-1) shot close to 50 percent in the second half but finished just 5-for-25 from three for the game.

The Broncos were helped by a 10-0 advantage off the bench and a 16-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Notre Dame was led by 28 points by Dusty Stromer and Caleb Foster had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Brophy takes on rival Saint Mary’s on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“We played them here last year so it has been where we meet up for this great rivalry,” said Hooten. “We have a lot of alumni in the area and alumni who talk to our team about the importance of that game. The energy will be there from the start.”
