Get to Know: Football's #13 Sam Williams

Sam Williams is a two-sport athlete for the Broncos. He wears No. 13 for an unusual reason. He hopes to play football but could see himself attending the University of Arizona and attempting to walk on to the program. He has a family history at Brophy including a grandfather who graduated in 1966, two cousins that went to the school and his brother, Zach, who graduated in 2020.

How is your senior season going?

“It is going well. They have moved me around a little bit from safety to linebacker. It has been fun. Obviously, I wish we had a better record. We could have a better record because all our games were close. It has been a great experience overall. I have connected a lot with younger guys I did not know last year. I missed the guys from last year, but I feel this year we have a bond.”

Do you want to play football after Brophy?

“That is a question a lot of people ask me. I have no clue yet. I do if I have the opportunity. I think I have the opportunity to go to some smaller schools. I would like the opportunity to go to D1 but if I do not it will be the UofA for me.”

What has been your favorite Brophy moment?

“I was not in this moment because I was injured. Last year in the Homecoming game against Chaparral. Our guy Matthew Diaz had a pick to win the game 28-27. It was amazing to be a part of it. We were hyped up and it was fun.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

“I want to make the playoffs and have fun doing it. I want to play the best defense I can, be the best version of ourselves and improve every week.”

What is a fun fact about Sam Williams?

“A fun fact about me is I also play basketball.”

What is the transition like between football and basketball?

“It is extremely hard. Football conditioning is a lot different, and basketball is constant. A lot of the football benefits basketball: athleticism, strength in the post, and toughness. It is difficult finding your shot again. Last year it took me a good two months to get back into it. It was the middle of the season when I was feeling good about myself. I learned a lot from it. This year will be easier.”

Do you have a favorite sport?

“This is how I put it. I like basketball more, but I am better at football and have more potential.”

Why do you wear #13?

“It has always been my unlucky number. My dog died on my golden birthday - my 13th birthday - on October 13 and it was Friday the 13th. I chose it for my senior year because I wanted to represent that number.”

What does Senior Night mean to you?

“It is crazy. I have always watched my brother and his friends  have their senior nights. This is going to be forever. It is crazy how it has come so fast. But I appreciate it, to have a senior night and play my two sports.”
