Golf Wins Lightning Shortened Brophy Invitational

The Brophy College Preparatory golf team led its two-day invitational with just holes remaining when lightning forced the stoppage of play and eventually the cancellation of the round. Players were called off the course after 5:00 p.m. and after a 30-minute delay tournament officials decided play could not resume. Brophy won the team title and Tyler Spielman was the medalist based on the first-round results from Monday.

At the time of the stoppage, Spielman led the individual standings at five-under par with senior Charlie Palmer one stroke back at four-under par. Junior Henry Dall had the round of the day at four-under par to move into third place with one hole left.

The history books will record the invitational as a single-day event with Spielman winning for the second year in a row with a 67. Palmer was second with a 69 and senior Trevor Karber was third with a 70. Sophomore Nick Lyman was fifth with a 71 and Dall finished sixth at 72.

The Broncos notched five of the top six spots in the individual field and won the team title by 25 strokes with a 277 team score. Chaparral was second at 302 with Saguaro placing third at 310.

The Broncos are back at Phoenix Country Club on Thursday, hosting Perry and Hamilton for a nine-hole event.
