Brophy Incorporates Service into Faculty/Staff In-Service

PHOENIX – August 14, 2017 – Last year, students at Brophy College Preparatory completed well over 31,000 service hours through the Office of Faith and Justice. With many clubs that focus on service, athletic teams that come together for community projects at least once during their season, and students who choose to get involved with organizations on their own, this number increases significantly.

In solidarity with Brophy’s hard-working students and as a reminder of the school’s Jesuit mission, faculty and staff chose to make a morning of serving others part of their yearly in-service. Two days before the start of school, they stepped onto buses in jeans, t-shirts and close-toed shoes to spread out around the Phoenix metro area and work at agencies and organizations such as St. Mary’s Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joseph the Worker, Andre House and the Welcome to America Project.

As bags of food – cereal, tuna, beans, pasta – were prepared, used clothing was sorted, basic hygiene items were inventoried, and furniture was delivered to families seeking refuge in our community, it brought another world much closer – a world where the next meal is not assured, where new clothing cannot be afforded, where it can be a struggle to maintain basic personal grooming, and where people must flee their homelands to ensure survival.

President Adria Renke commented, “To be 'in the trenches,' rather than just talking or teaching about service in offices and classrooms, was a deeply meaningful experience and a reminder of the importance of walking and working side-by-side with one another for our brothers and sisters in need.”

She added, “Together with our young men, we look forward to a new school year, and to renewing our commitment to aid the marginalized in our community as men and women for and with others.” AMDG
