Lacrosse Wins “Fight Like Flo” Game over Pinnacle

The Brophy lacrosse team posted a 16-3 win over Pinnacle on Friday in the annual “Fight Like Flo Game” played in honor of Kylie "Flo" Rodgers, the older sister to Brophy Lacrosse alum and current University of Tennesse player Noah Rodgers '22 and daughter of Blake and Mary Kay.

“It has started to become a mantra of our team ‘Fight Like Flo”,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “I asked Noah before the game what that meant to him so I could talk to the team in his words. It meant fighting, obviously, but also putting your ego aside and playing and fighting for each other. It is not worrying about the end outcome but part of the journey. It is what Kylie did fighting every day. She put herself aside to make sure her family knew she was comfortable and in a good spot.”

After Pinnacle tied the game at 2, Brophy ran off 14 unanswered goals. Laird Miller found the net twice in the second period and Erik Volfson and Eli Friedman added goals for a 6-2 lead at the half. Eight goals in the third period put the game out of reach.

“If we can take a little bit from Kylie and apply it to our team I think we can go far,” said Harbeson. “It is about being selfless and egoless, the power of the team, and enjoying each moment we have together.”

Overall, Ethan Swenson scored four goals in the win and Laird Miller and Eli Friedman each added three scores.

“We really needed this week to propel us moving forward,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “I am really happy with our effort this week going 3-0 against some tough teams. We are looking forward to next week.

Kylie was a 4-year varsity softball player (her #20 is now retired), and XCP graduate '19 who battled Ewing's Sarcoma for five long years, and sadly passed away in September 2021 at the age of 20.  Kylie's ferocious spirit, love of life, and tremendous legacy were inspirational to the Brophy championship team last year, who dedicated their season to her memory and honored her and The Rodgers' wishes by supporting one of her favorite pediatric cancer research organizations, the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation.  Overall, $20,000 was donated to the organization.

This year, the Rodgers requested donations go to another of Kylie's wishes, helping local families battling pediatric cancer through support and assistance, and have chosen a local pediatric cancer support organization, Lighthouse for Hope, which provides financial and emotional support for vulnerable families, and programming for adolescent and young adult patients battling cancer and blood disorders in Maricopa County.
