Swimming Preps for State Championships with AMDG Invite Win

In the final meet before the AIA State Championships, the Brophy swimming and diving team made their final push for individual qualifications with an impressive performance in the annual AMDG Invitational.

“Everything,” said Head Coach Daren Brubaker when asked about what his team did well on Saturday. “It was everything. The idea behind this meet is to have guys that are on the bubble perform. The most important thing is to have momentum from this meet and carry it on to the next weekend in state.”

The Broncos won all three relays and five individual events and posted numerous personal bests and top times in the quest to reach the state meet. Senior Jake Herrera (4:47.06) won the 500-yard freestyle in an event in which Grady Garbarino had a massive drop in his time with a 5:04.77. Rodrigo Carvajal won the 50 free in 22.51, while Gabriel Gonda took the 100-yard backstroke in 51.23. Fischer Whitehead won the backstroke in 1:01.34 and senior Finnegan Crawford clocked 50.91 in 100-yard butterfly.

“They swam out of their minds today,” said Brubaker. “I knew Fischer was going to go fast but not that fast. Another big surprise was Rodrigo in the 50 free and finally finding some speed. I got guys that had some great experiences this weekend even though they are not going to state. It is remarkable and valuable to take this experience to the next year.”

The meet opened with the foursome of Gonda, Theodore Neilson, Crawford and Caden Oprandy winning the 200-yard medley relay in a Reese Aquatic Center pool record.

“We are on top of the world right now,” said freshman Grady Garbarino. We are a team, and the team is family. We love each other and we are going to support each other no matter what.”

Brophy won the meet with 567 points to easily out-point second place Pinnacle (300).
