Fifth-seeded Brophy posted a win on penalty kicks over No. 4 seed Verrado to advance to the AIA Open semifinals on Feb. 25 against Sunrise Mountain at the Graham Family Sports Campus at 6 p.m. Goalie JP Odden made two stops in the first three penalty kicks as the Broncos converted four straight on kicks by Alex King, Joey Fritz, Sonny Coury, and Eli Hagan for a 4-2 win on the road.
Jackson Ducusin scored his eighth goal of the season in the 25th minute off a Conor Byers assist to take the lead for Brophy. The Vipers tied the game midway through the second half, and the teams played two overtimes before settling it on penalty kicks.
No. 9 seed Sunrise Mountain upset No. 1 Sunnyside 3-1 to advance. The second semifinal pairs Tucson teams No. 2 Catalina Foothills, a 7-1 winner over No. 7 Sandra Day O’Connor, against No. 3 Mica Mountain, which posted a 3-3 (5-3) penalty-kick win over No. 6 Salpointe.
