Freshman Samir Sumar Advances to AIA Division I Singles Championship
No. 3 seed freshman Samir Sumar advanced to the AIA Division I Singles Championship on Monday at 5 p.m. at Paseo Racquet Club. He will face the two-time defending champion Vikram Narendran of Rincon/University.
Sumar upset No. 6 seed Arnav Hignorani of Desert Mountain, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seed Ethan Cooley of Hamilton, 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals.
He has won all four of his matches in straight sets, dropping just seven games.
Sumar is looking to become the first Brophy singles champ since Hudson Blake in 2013 and the seventh singles champion in school history.
Sophomore Brendan Linstrom, the fifth seed, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by No. 4 seed Benjamin Suljuzovic, Desert Vista, 6-4, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Layton Fincham and Haan Lee also lost in the quarterfinals to third-seeded Edward Koskulics / Andrew Rosen of Desert Vista.
