Tennis Wins Back-to-Back State Titles with 5-0 Win over Hamilton

The Brophy tennis team swept top seed Hamilton 5-0 to win the AIA Division I State Championship for the second consecutive season and a state record 24th time in school history. The Broncos were playing in their eighth consecutive team final.

“Hamilton is an amazing tennis team,” said Head Coach Chris Campbell ‘84. “They were undefeated until today and region champs. They are a younger team, and they will be back. We didn't know what to expect since they beat us in a duel. It served as a bookmark for our season. I am so happy that so many seniors who gave four years to the program can leave as state champs.”

Senior Logan Phillips officially clinched the match with his 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

Freshman Brendan Linstrom opened the scoring for the team with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. Then he let his senior teammates finish it out.

Tyler Woo won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, and Naren Gudavalli pulled out a second-set tiebreaker to take his match 6-3, 7-6 (4) to build a 3-0 lead. Ryan Zerbib battled at the top spot with a 6-4, 6-0 win to set up the singles sweep.

“I am spoiled me for sure,” said Campbell about his seniors. “I can trust them to get the job done on the court. They provide internal leadership and management. I am going to miss them a ton.”

Brophy lost to Hamilton earlier in the season, 5-4, and dropped a match at Catalina Foothills. The team finished the season with a 21-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in Arizona.
