Tennis Defeats Corona del Sol 5-0 in Quarterfinals
The No. 2 Brophy tennis team defeated Corona del Sol 5-0 at Xavier College Prep in the quarterfinals of the AIA Division I tennis Championships. The Broncos will play No. 3 Perry at 9 a.m. on Friday at Phoenix Tennis Center.
The winner advances to the state championship, where it will face the winner of No. 1 Hamilton and No. 5 Arizona College Prep.
Brophy is the defending state champion and has played in seven consecutive finals (2020 CoSID season excluded) from 2017 to 24. The Broncos have won a state record 23 state championships in school history.
Freshman Brendan Linstrom led the team in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Nathan Hamon. Senior Naren Gudavalli was also a 6-0, 6-0 straight set winner at No. 4. Senior Ryan Zerbib won at No. 1 singles, while senior Logan Phillips posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. Senior Tyler Woo recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5. The match ended with Arin Gopakumar one game shy of securing his match.
