Rowing Standout Josh Murar Commits to Gonzaga University

Brophy senior Josh Murar has committed to compete for Gonzaga and attend the school in the fall.

“I love the campus, and they are an amazing Jesuit program like Brophy,” said Murar, who was named the Most Improved Rower in 2025.  “I'm excited to follow that path to keep the values I found here to follow me to college.”

He will compete for Head Coach Dan Gehn, who begins his 32nd year as Director of Rowing and head men's rowing coach at Gonzaga University in 2025. Under his guidance, the Gonzaga crew has become a recognized team on the West Coast, and in recent years, the Bulldogs have started to appear on the national rowing scene.

Gonzaga competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), a Division I conference. They joined the MPSF as an affiliate member to compete against top West Coast programs, including Cal, Stanford, Washington, and Oregon State.

Murar has been a four-year member of the program and a standout with Fairfield University commit Jack Niddifer on the Brophy double. He lists finishing sixth out of 24 at the Southwest Regionals Regatta last May and his fifth place out of 20 at the San Diego Fall Classic among his top results. They recently finished fourth in Long Beach.

“It has grounded me as a person and helped me discover who I am,” said Murar about his rowing experience. “There have been so many seasons I have needed rowing to keep me centered. It has helped me to do better in school. I can manage it and have something to look forward to every day.”

He has also been a member of the BroncoCon and Cooking Club during his time at Brophy. The National Academy of Medical Scientists also recognized him for his science fair project.

“Josh Murar is a remarkable scholar-athlete whose talent and character set him apart,” said Head Coach Pete Cannia. “He possesses a rare athletic ability that would have translated to success in any sport, and we at Brophy Rowing feel incredibly fortunate that he chose rowing—a sport he truly loves. Josh has played a major role in shaping the direction of our program and helping build a winning culture. He brings a championship attitude to every day, lifting those around him and leaving a lasting impact on our team. We look forward to watching him continue to grow, succeed, and inspire at the next level.”
