Swimming’s Joseph Jarrett-Torres to Sign with Adams State University

Brophy senior Joseph Jarrett-Torres has committed to swimming and attending school at Adams State University. The Division II school, which competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, is located in Alamosa, Colo.

“One of the things I liked about the school is that it is in a small town,” said Jarrett-Torres. “There will not be many distractions, and I appreciate that it is at an elevation. It is different, and I think I will do really well in that training situation.”

Jarrett-Torres will compete for Melinda Hunzeker, who enters her fifth year as the head coach of the Adams State men’s and women’s swim programs.

“Coach Melinda stands out with the way she carries herself and the team,” said Jarrett-Torres, who plans to major in political science and government with a minor in Spanish, with a pre-med track. “She is going to give us what we need to work and will be there for us. She wants us to be independently motivated.”

Jarrett-Torres transferred to Brophy from Apollo High School two seasons ago. He has swam at two AIA State Championships for Brophy and helped the Broncos to back-to-back team titles. He finished 13th in the 200 individual medley (2:00.81) and 15th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.87) in 2025.

“Joe Jarrett-Torres always has a smile on his face, and his positive attitude is infectious for all the swimmers around him,” said Head Coach Patrick O’Neill. “Joe works hard during practice and never complains. He is such a positive force on the team, both in and out of the pool. He is one of our breaststroke and Individual Medley specialists, and he is always looking to improve his stroke technique. We will miss him and wish him luck next year.”

He was also 14th in the 100 breaststroke at the state championships in 2024, with a time of 1:01.79.

“It was amazing to be part of two state championships,” recalled Jarrett-Torres. “It was the perfect year to come to Brophy.”

He also swims for Phoenix Swim Club Coach Darian Townsend. He recently set personal bests at the Four Corners Speedo Sectional Championships in both 100 (47.74) and 200 freestyle (1:44.88).

He is a National AP Scholar with Honors and a recipient of the College Board National Recognition Award. He received the Performance of the Year Award in 2024 at the swimming banquet. He also participated in Model UN and the Water Polo club, and went to the Dominican Republic on an Immersion Trip.

His favorite moment was attending the Swimming retreat as a senior.

“It felt different going to Manresa for a second time and knowing I had a different role as a senior, and being able to share my story and what the team meant to me.”
