Track and Field’s Rylan Umphrey Wins Long Jump State Title

Junior Rylan Umphrey won the AIA Division I long jump title with a personal-best leap of 23-7 on his final attempt to win the state championship. Over the last four years, it is the third individual state champion in the event for the Broncos, coached by assistant coach Chris Ramsey. Alum Brennan McHenry ‘23 won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.

Umphrey was fifth heading into the finals with a best of 22-3.5, but had improved on each of his jumps. He extended his best to a personal-best 22-10.5 on the fourth jump to move into second place. After a foul on the fifth jump, he had fallen to third overall before recording his best of the meet to win.

He was seventh at both the Division I and Open events in 2024.

Brophy advanced three hurdlers in the 110m hurdles, led by senior Nero Nuez, with the second fastest time in 14.65. Classmates Will DeSpong and Darius Alberty were third and sixth overall. The three did not advance in the 300m hurdles.

The 4x100m relay was fourth overall in heats, earning a spot in Saturday’s final in 41.52. The 4x400-m relay was 11th, and the 4800m relay was 13th.

Sophomore Garrett Larsen earned a spot in the 400m final with his 49.12 in the second heat. Sophomore Tanner Bice was 10th in the high jump at 6-2 and will compete in the triple jump on Saturday.
