Football Announces New Offensive and Special Teams Coordinators

Taylor Mazzone and Kyle Vanden Bosch Join Varsity Staff

Former collegiate offensive coordinator and assistant coach Taylor Mazzone has been named the Offensive Coordinator for the Brophy football program, while former NFL standout Kyle Vanden Bosch will be the new Special Teams Coordinator, Head Coach Jason Jewell announced.

“We are excited to add these two coaches to our staff,” said Jewell. “They bring experienced football backgrounds that will help the Broncos as we prepare for the 2023 season and continue to develop our players in the program on and off the field.”

Mazzone joins the Bronco staff with an experienced collegiate background as an assistant coach and coordinator during his 14-year career at six schools, including Arizona State, Arizona, Idaho State, San Diego, Texas A&M, and UCLA.

“We are excited to bring Taylor Mazzone on staff as the offensive coordinator,” said Jewell. “He brings a ton of experience to our staff, recently serving as the offensive coordinator at Idaho State. He had glowing recommendations from Charlie Ragle, assistant head coach at Arizona State, who is one of my closest friends. Getting someone of this caliber will be great for our football team. We are bringing on a guy who was calling plays against UNLV and San Diego State last year and has interviewed for several NFL jobs.”

He most recently worked as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Idaho State University under Ragle.

“Taylor Mazzone has grown up with football in his DNA,” said Ragle, who recently joined the staff at ASU. “He is extremely sharp and works to develop quarterbacks as good as anybody in the country.”

Mazzone worked with six NFL quarterbacks in their NFL Draft preparation, including first-round selections Tim Tebow, Christian Ponder, and Robert Griffin III. He also coached Brock Osweiler (2nd Round) at Arizona State and Brett Hundley (5th Round), and Josh Rosen (1st Round) at UCLA.

After playing at East Carolina and helping the team to two Conference USA titles, he began his coaching career at ASU in 2010 and was the assistant QB coach as a graduate assistant in 2011. The Sun Devil offense ranked 28th nationally and scored 33.2 points per game. He then joined the staff at UCLA under Jim Mora for four seasons, including three as QB coach. The Bruins’ offense ranked in the top 25 each season, and his quarterbacks and receivers had record-breaking seasons. Hundley finished his three seasons with 49 school records, including the career touchdown mark, while Rosen was the Pac 12 Freshman of the Year in 2015. J Payton finished his career as the all-time UCLA receptions leader.

At Texas A&M under Kevin Sumlin from 2016-17, Mazzone was the wide receiver coach and assistant QB coach where he coached wide receiver Josh Reynolds. The Aggie's offense averaged 468 yards per game in 2016 and scored 32.7 points per game in 2017. He also coached at Arizona (2018-19), and San Diego (2020).

Vanden Bosch joins the varsity staff after working with the Bronco freshman teams last season. He joined the Brophy staff in October, assisting Strength and Conditioning coach Joe Denk, and will move up to the varsity staff this season where he will direct the Bronco special teams unit.

“Kyle was an intense and passionate player in the NFL and I know his demeanor will rub off on our players,” said Jewell. “He was also hired in October in our weight room, so his impact is already being felt.”

He had a 12-year career in the NFL including three Pro Bowl selections while playing with the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, and Tennessee Titans. Vanden Bosch had a standout career at the University of Nebraska where he was an All-Big 12 selection and the Draddy Award winner, the “Academic Heisman” awarded by the National Football Foundation. In 2000, he set the single-season school record for blocked kicks. He was named the school’s lifter of the year for three consecutive seasons after putting on 40 pounds in his career in the weight room. He has two sons in the Brophy program: Bastian ‘26 and Case ‘26.

Mazzone takes over for Tony Cotton, who served as the interim coordinator to end the 2022 season. He remains on the staff as Co-Offensive Coordinator and will continue to coach the wide receivers. He will also join the Brophy faculty in the fall as a substitute teacher.

”Tony is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle here,” said Jewell. “Getting him on campus is huge! Our kids love him and he is going to have a tremendous impact on our campus. Tony was thrown to the wolves last year, asked to call plays mid-season last year and he did a tremendous job. Tony and Taylor will work closely together.”

Vanden Bosch takes over for Chris Ramsey, who remains in the program as a coach for the freshman team.

“Chris really took a ton of pride in the role and did a nice job with our special teams,” said Jewell.

He is stepping away from varsity to spend time with his family.

“Anytime you can add this much experience to a program, it is positive for the kids and the program in general,” said Jewell. “I want to thank the Brophy administration for their support in these moves. It shows a tremendous investment in football. Adding two varsity coaches to our staff that are also on campus is huge. Kyle and Tony will get the opportunity to be around our kids all day and be positive role models for them. And getting someone with as much experience as Taylor to call our plays, is a win for the Brophy Broncos. Thanks to our AD Josh Garcia, Principal Bob Ryan, and Vice Principal Jim Bopp for the support and belief in the vision we have for the football team. This is a great day for the Brophy Broncos!”

“We're excited about the additions to our football program,” said Garcia. “Like all places, football is our biggest sport on campus. Being a fall sport, football often serves as the tone setter for not only our athletic programs but for our entire school community. Coach Mazonne brings a ton of experience to the offense and I'm excited about the development that will happen under him. Coach Vanden Bosch and Coach Cotton are role models for self-discipline and hard work, which are qualities we're constantly trying to instill in our young men. We're looking for their impact on the field, but also the influence they'll have on our campus.”
