Brophy teacher, Mr. Tim Broyles, just returned from El Salvador, where he traveled to represent Brophy and the Family to Family Foundation, as two young ladies received college degrees as a result of an effort which began in 2008.
Heidi Ortiz and Vilma Ramirez, both from a tiny campesino village in northern Morazan province in El Salvador, graduated with degrees in nursing.
From Mr. Broyles:
These two young women represent the culmination of a dream Kathy Pidgeon (former Brophy parent) and I had way back in 2008, to start a scholarship fund for the kids in Brophy's two sister communities, La Hacienda and El Junquillo. With the help of Greg Hoyt, Karen Curosh, Jeff Scoon, Bob Ryan, Susan Charlton, Sarah Berg, Justin Graham, Mike Jesberger, not to mention the FUNDAHMER staff in El Salvador, including Angela Dominguez, Jose Gomez, Laurel Marshal, and Anita Ortiz, as well as many benefactors and supporters in the U.S., we have been able to support these young women and many other young people in these villages who without help would not have the chance to go to school at all, let alone get a college degree.
These two young women also happen to be the first college graduates in the entire caserio of Agua Blanca, an area the size of greater Phoenix. To all of you who have given to these young people, thank you so much! This is only the beginning of our mission to turn a life of poverty into a life of hope.
I'd also like to thank in particular Kim Baldwin, who, as (then) Assistant Principal for Ministry was instrumental in helping this scholarship program get off the ground back in its early years of 2009 and 2010. Also, I'd like to thank all students who contribute to the Turkey Drive, especially when we were first getting started. Heidi and Vilma have you to thank for their degrees, as well as many others at Brophy-- Shelly Schuering, Paul Fisko, Chris White, Sue Hornbeck, the Varsity Shop, the President's Office, the Business Office, the OFJ in general, and all of you who have led the Brophy El Salvador Trip or who have supported it from behind the scenes over the years. I carry a message of gratitude to all of you from the young people and parents of El Junquillo and La Hacienda, El Salvador!
