Brophy in Second at NE Valley Championships After Day 1
Junior Rylan Umphrey won the long jump (22-1.75) as Brophy scored 24 points to finish the first day in second place at the NE Valley Invitational. Senior Evan Giesecke placed eighth in the 3200 meters in a personal best 9:45.12, and the 4x800-m relay took second in 8:10.74.
Other finals included Tanner Bice placing seventh in the high jump (6-2) and sophomore Shane Reiersgaard placing ninth in the shot put (43-2).
The 4x100m relay (Noche, DeSpong, Ferrari, Umphrey) advanced in the preliminaries with a meet record 41.86, and the 4x400 (Martinez, Shaff, Swiergol, Larsen) were fifth in the prelims (3:26.39).
Brophy advanced 15 athletes in the prelims of the sprints and hurdles. Will DeSpong had the top time in the 110m hurdles at 14.62 with teammate Nero Nuez in second at 14.74. DeSpong was also third in the 300m hurdles, and Umphrey was third in the 100 meters.
Javelin, discus, triple jump, and pole vault will be contested on Wednesday, with all track finals including the 800 meters and 1600 meters.
