Baseball Wins Playoff Opener on Walk-Off over Perry

Sophomore Dre Ethier drove in Braden Harmon to give Brophy a 4-3 win over Perry in the first round of the AIA 6A Conference Tournament at Opus Field. The Broncos advance to Round 2A at Red Mountain on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The game can be seen on the NFHS Network via the Varsity Show. 

Dennis Gregory III provided the bulk of the offense for the team before the decisive seventh. He went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Brophy took the lead in the second on a double by Gregory that scored Chris Sinacori and Isaac Holder, who had reached via a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively.

Perry tied the game in the fourth with two runs of starter Jack Lafflam, who allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits over 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts.

Gregory gave Brophy the lead back in the bottom half of the inning with his second double, scoring Holder, who had singled to start the inning. 

Senior Benton Hickman (2-3) pitched 2.1 innings out of the bullpen for the win. He entered in the fifth to get the final out, leaving the go-ahead runner on third in the sixth and getting a double play to end the seventh after the Pumas had two on base to set up the seventh inning heroics. 

Ethier finished 2-for-3 in the game.
