We welcome several new faculty members, as well as the newest members of our Alumni Service Corps.
Meet Our New 2016-2017 Faculty Members
Serena Crosson - Serena moved to Phoenix this summer from the Bay Area. She earned her B.A. in Classical Literature from the University of California-Berkeley and an M.A. in Classics from San Francisco State. Serena will be joining the World Languages Department and will be teaching Latin.
Kevin Elinski - Originally from Wisconsin, Kevin moved to Arizona in 2007 to develop an Engineering program at Wickenburg High School. This program was one of the sources of ideas and inspiration as we developed our Innovation Commons two years ago, so we are excited to have Kevin bring his experience to our program as the Director of Innovative Technologies. Kevin earned a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and an M.B.A from Marquette University.
Jake Kelly ’09 - Jake returns to Brophy, and to the Fine Arts Department where he was such a fixture during his time here as a student. He earned his B.A. from Gonzaga University where he was involved in Student Government and was the Photo Editor for the Gonzaga student newspaper. Since graduating from Gonzaga, Jake has worked as a social worker, a freelance photographer, and a strategic planner for the Arizona Department of Homeland Security.
Juan Pablo Marrufo del Toro, S.J. - Father Juan Pablo will split his full time teaching load between the Math and Science departments as well as contribute to the sacramental and pastoral life of our community. He holds a B.A. in Business with a Minor in Physics from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente, Guadalajara; his M.A. in Social Philosophy from Loyola of Chicago; and a Master of Divinity and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara.
Julia Pierre - Julia is a 2010 alumna of Xavier College Preparatory and earned a B.S. and an M.Ed. from Arizona State. She has been teaching in a self-contained 6th grade classroom at Solano Elementary School where she sought and secured three different grants to introduce computer programming and 3-D printing to her students. Julia will bring this dedication and inquiry-based instruction to her work as the Science teacher at Loyola Academy.
Mike Schwertley ’99 - Mike earned a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona. At the U of A, he was a member of the varsity football and basketball teams. For the last few years, Mike has been very present on campus since he’s been involved with the Brophy basketball program, most recently as the Head JV Coach. This year, he joins the faculty to teach PE and to coach football and basketball.
Returning Former Faculty:
Jose Leyba ’94 - Jose will be rejoining our faculty to teach Spanish in the World Languages Department. He’ll also help coach wrestling and will have a strong presence in our retreat and immersion programs.
Jonathan Londoño ’10 - Jonathan was a member of the Alumni Service Corps two years ago, and last semester he worked with Bob Johnson teaching science at Loyola Academy. This year, Jonathan will become our Student Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator. In this capacity, he will partner with teachers and departments across campus to enhance the ways that we serve our traditionally under-represented students and families.
Alumni Service Corps
Flavio Bravo ’12 - Flavio earned his B.A. from Loyola University of Chicago. This year, he’ll be working in the Office of Faith and Justice (OFJ) and will teach one section of Ethics.
Alex Higgins ’12 - Alex earned his B.A. in Justice and Society as well as his B.S. in Biology from Creighton University. As an ASC member he’ll work at Loyola Academy where he’ll teach Religion and assist with a number of other activities.
Wade Hoyt ’12 - Wade returns to Brophy after four years at Gonzaga where he studied Business Administration. This year, he’ll join Alex at Loyola Academy where he’ll teach PE.
John Medici ’12 - John will join the staff of the OFJ this year and will teach one section of Government. As a student at Michigan State, John studied Social Relations and Policy.
Matthew Munhall ’12 - At the University of Notre Dame, Matt studied English and, as an ASC member, he’ll teach one section of English and join the OFJ staff.
