Brophy Senior Ben De Spong Commits to Alabama-Birmingham

Brophy senior Ben De Spong has committed to play soccer and attend school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. UAB plays in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).

“UAB was the best place I could pursue my academics and athletics,” said De Spong. “Playing Division I soccer in the American Conference is important to me. I am also excited to be part of the Entrepreneurship program and study business.”

De Spong played goalie for RSL Arizona MLS Next and Head Coach Jordan Rideout last season after two years with SC Del Sol. He played one season at Brophy during his freshman season. RSL Arizona tied the LA Galaxy professional academy in a match this season.

He has trained with professional A-League teams in New Zealand, where he has dual citizenship. He has also been in contact with their U17 and U19 teams for the New Zealand national team player pool.

“It is a dream come true and an honor to play in college and have this opportunity,” said De Spong. “Committing last second was hectic, but it showed my hard work paid off.”

He has been a member and President of the Young Entrepreneurs Club, where he won the Bronco Tank as a sophomore.
