Freshman Sumar Runner-up at AIA Division I Singles Championship
Brophy freshman Samir Sumar lost to two-time defending champion and senior Vikram Narendran of Rincon/University in the AIA Division I Singles Championship, 6-1, 6-4, at Paseo Racquet Club on Monday.
“I am incredibly proud that a ninth grader new to the high school tennis scene could fight his way through the tournament to the finals,” said Head Coach Chris Campbell. “He played a great match and a stellar second set. He played with grace and allowed his opponent to enjoy the night, which was super meaningful for me.”
Sumar fell behind 3-0 after an early service break and lost the opener 6-1. But he was not going to go away easily as the No 3 seed who had not lost a set prior to the finals. He led 3-1 and 4-3 in the second set before eventually falling to Narendran.
“I am proud of my first year making it to the final,” said Sumar. “Unfortunately, I could not get it done. At first I had a little nerves, but I got more comfortable and was able to attack his weaknesses. My teammates also performed well in the tournament. We are looking forward to the team competition.”
The two-time AIA Division defending state champion will play No. 10 Higley on May 6 at Xavier College Prep at 3 p.m.
Brophy College Preparatory is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Alumni Awards, which will be presented during the Father–Son Communion Breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 22. The annual gathering is one of Brophy’s most cherished traditions, bringing together generations of fathers and sons for a morning of faith, fellowship, and celebration of the Brophy brotherhood.
