Golfer Mateo Berastegui Commits to Fort Lewis College

Golf senior Mateo Berastegui has committed to playing golf and attending Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. The Skyhawks are a member of the NCAA Division II within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

“I am excited to meet new people and explore new courses in Colorado,” said Berastegui. “Playing golf in college is going to be really fun.”

He will play for Head Coach Sean Griswold, who is in his third season as the program's director. A former player at Arizona State, he has been actively involved in amateur golf at the local, state, and national levels for the last 30 years. The Skyhawks finished fourth in the conference tournament and advanced an individual to the NCAA West South Central Regional play in 2025.

“I really like Coach Groswold,” said Berastegui. “He has presented us with some excellent opportunities for both me and the team. They have a great work ethic as a program. It will help me get better every day. It is something I strive for.”

He helped lead his team to its second consecutive AIA Division I State Championship on November 6. Berastegui finished fifth individually with a two-day score of 139 (-5). He played in four events as a junior. He had several highlights this season, including finishing 12th at the Brophy Rodeo presented by Ping (71-74) and earning medalist honors twice at Desert Ridge/Casa Grande with a two-under 34 and at Casa Grande with a three-under-par 33.

“While Mateo's game struggled in the early parts of his Brophy golf career, he remained resolute and worked as hard as anyone,” said Head Coach Jon Shores. “He has continued to improve and get better every year, really coming into his own as a player.  While he has worked hard to improve his game, he has worked tirelessly to be a great teammate and have a positive influence on his peers. Mateo will continue to grow as a player and leader as he makes the transition to his new home at Fort Lewis.”

Earning a spot on the state team as a senior highlighted his season.

“I am proving to myself I can do it, and to do it in my senior year has been really nice,” said Berastegui. “It is a big thing to be on the Brophy team, and we try to represent Brophy the best we can. It has been fun to play with all my friends and make some good memories.”

He enjoys playing pickleball in his free time and hopes to represent the state team while contributing to the social golf club.

Berastegui is one of three golfers to make collegiate commitments this season.
