Top seed Brophy advanced to the Arizona Lacrosse League state championship for the fifth consecutive season with a 19-4 win over Pinnacle last night. The Broncos are seeking a record fourth consecutive state title (2022, 2023, 2024) and ninth title in school history.
“The key to winning on Friday is humility,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “Knowing that at any moment, if we do not play our best lacrosse, we can lose. We must hold each other accountable and ensure we complete our extra reps before and after practice. We just need to play our game.”
Maddax Ranley, Ben Giest, and Eli Friedman scored three times in the win over Pinnacle. Brophy built a big lead in the first quarter, starting the game 7-0 and led 9-2 after 12 minutes and 15-2 at the half.
Sophomore Jack Grisoni had 13 faceoff wins and a team-best eight ground balls. Junior goalie Ryan Peitzmeier had even saves over the first three quarters to protect the lead.
Brophy will play No. 2 seed Chandler, who defeated Desert Vista 9-8 in the semifinals, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Desert Vista High School. The Broncos also defeated Boulder Creek 16-1 in the quarterfinals.
The Broncos are looking to become the first team in Arizona lacrosse history to win four straight titles. The program has four seniors committed to play college lacrosse, two underclass commitments, and eight freshmen on the varsity team.
Brophy finished the regular season with a 10-0 record in the state, winning the Grand Canyon Conference title with a 167-58 goal differential. They have a 16-7 overall record entering the championship, outscoring their opponents 35-5 in two postseason games.
“We have a lot of kids who have come to school here to play lacrosse,” said Harbeson. “They are working hard. We have a talented group with only five seniors. They are the catalyst of our program. Our younger guys want to work hard to send them out on a high note.”
They also enter the game with a 37-game winning streak in Arizona league regular and postseason play, dating back to a 12-9 loss to Chandler on Feb. 28, 2023.
