Brophy Senior Commits to Play Soccer at the University of Virginia

Senior Luke Burns has committed to play soccer at the University of Virginia, one of the top soccer programs in the country.

“I decided to go there for their good soccer program, the chance to play in the ACC, and playing in a program that has won seven National Championships,” said Burns. “I wanted to make sure I could build a connection with the players and coaches. The campus is beautiful, and their academics are amazing.”

Burns has played for Phoenix Rising. He will play for George Gelnovatch at Virginia. He has led the program to two national championships and six NCAA College Cup appearances.

“Phoenix Rising has helped me develop as a leader and captain over the last 10 years,” said Burns. “The club has helped me find my confidence on the soccer field. They have helped me with all the college connections and especially the connection to Virginia.”

Continuing his soccer career in college is the next step in his soccer journey.

“It means a lot to continue playing,” said Burns. “It has been my dream to play soccer professionally since I was a little kid. Playing at Virginia is another step in the path to get there.”

Burns has been involved with Souls 2 Soles while serving on the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Teen Board to help raise money and participate in programs at the hospital. He also volunteers at Ability 360, a gym for the mentally and physically challenged. He is also a member of the Red and White Club and Best Buddies clubs on campus.

While playing club has prevented his participation with the school team, it was a choice that helped him achieve his goals.

“It would be so cool to play for Brophy soccer, but I needed to look at my future and what was best for me,” said Burns, “There are minor risks of injury. It was the best thing for me, and my future is to continue to play club.”

Phoenix Rising has earned a No. 1 national ranking with the club and finished among the top two teams in the league for four straight years during his tenure.

A center attack midfielder, Burns will focus on upcoming showcases and the June playoffs before heading to Virginia.
