Lacrosse’s Deion James to Play at Hampton

Lacrosse standout Deion James has committed to play at Hampton University in the fall and attend the school.

“I have been looking at Hampton since my freshman year,” said James. “I liked the campus and it is an HBCU. All the guys looked like me and we experienced the same things. It is cool to be able to connect to those guys.”

James led the Brophy team in face-off wins with 134 last season, scored three goals and three assists, and ranked third in ground balls.

“Deion found his niche in the lacrosse program during his sophomore year when we moved him to the faceoff position,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “Instead of complaining, Deion recognized this as an opportunity to earn more playing time and make a significant impact on our team. Deion's unwavering determination is evident in the countless hours he spent honing his craft outside of practice which has resulted in Deion becoming one of the top FOGO's on the West Coast.”

James joins a Hampton program coached by Chazz Woodson, a former Major League Lacrosse player.

“It is amazing to get scholarship money to get to something I love is crazy to me,” said James. “I love the coaches and attended a few camps with them.”

James says his Brophy experience has been everything to him.

“I help the team in winning faceoffs but also excel on the offensive end of the field,” said James. “Playing for Brophy has meant everything to me. It has propelled me to get offers and play the sport I Love. Coach Pat has helped all the guys. We are going to go for a third championship this year.”

Harbeson notes James' unique story is because of the obstacles he has overcome.

“Deion is not just a faceoff athlete committed to playing Division I lacrosse at Hampton University,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “He is an inspiration to the strength of the human spirit. At a young age, Deion lost his eye due to cancer, however, he never allowed this adversity to be an excuse and instead, he used it as a motivation.”

He will join three teammates at the Brophy Collegiate Signing Day celebration.
