Baseball’s Jack Ohman Commits to Yale University


Baseball utility standout and pitcher Jack Ohman has committed to play at Yale University and attend the Ivy League school in the fall.

“It has always been a big thing for my family for me to attend a university that would challenge me academically and athletically,” said Ohman. “It never crossed my mind until my junior year that I would have an opportunity like this, but it was always my goal. I am excelling at both. It worked out.”

Ohman plays all over the field for the Broncos, but it was on the mound where Yale first noticed him.

“They saw me play at the Arizona Fall Classic All-Academic Classic,” recalled Ohman. “I threw well and set a personal-best speed for my fastball. They kept tabs on me in the spring. They then invited me out there to tour the school, offered me, and it was a clear decision after I visited other schools I was considering.”

Ohman made 13 appearances for the Broncos with one start, recording two saves with a 4.79 ERA and hit .340 over 19 games.

“If I were to summarize Jack's time at Brophy in one word, it’d have to be “growth,” said Head Coach Josh Garcia ‘07. “I first met Jack when he was in 8th grade. He was maybe 4’11’’ and 100 pounds soaking wet.  Now, Jack stands at 6’1’’ and has turned himself into one of the top players in the state. Jack's fastball has gone from the low 80s to the low 90s in just over a year. All of this comes from Jack's dedication to his training and his commitment to holding himself to a higher standard.”

Garcia values his versatility for his team.

“Jack is somewhat of a “Swiss army knife” for our team,” said Garcia. “He can play infield or outfield while being a starting pitcher or a closer. Jack's “open to growth” mentality has helped him get to where he is today.”

Ohman, who plans to study Economics, is looking forward to helping the team in his super-utility role and hopes to earn a spot in the rotation. He is talented off the field. He played the cello in the orchestra until last year and was named 2023 Sports360AZ 2023 All-Academic first team with a 4.20 grade point average.

“I can play anywhere on the field, hit for average, and worked on my power this summer. We will see how it works out in the spring,” said Ohman. “I throw hard. I helped the team last year as the closer. Hopefully, I will be a starter this year.”

He will join Class of 2024 classmate football standout Billy Eastep, who has committed to playing for Yale. Ohman will play for Brian Hamm, who enters his second season leading the Bulldogs. He was named the National Coach of the Year after leading Eastern Connecticut State to the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championship.

“We just want to win in the playoffs,” said Ohman of his senior season goals.
