Jim Welty Receives Prestigious Arizona Teaching Award

PHOENIX, Sept. 28, 2023–On Sept. 28, at the Arizona Capitol, Mr. Jim Welty ’14, a faculty member in Brophy’s social studies department, received the Arizona Award for Teaching Financial Literacy from the Arizona Department of the Treasury and Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. Ms. Saura Masconale, associate director of the University of Arizona's Center for the Philosophy of Freedom, presented Mr. Welty with the award. It comes with a full-ride scholarship to the University of Arizona’s Master of Legal Studies in Law and Economics program.

"I'm humbled to have received such a prestigious award and thank the Arizona Department of the Treasury and the University of Arizona for their generosity. Financial literacy is a key element in students' well-being as they grow up. Their ability to save, budget and acknowledge the risks of debt will serve them tremendously into the future. Through this program, I'll have the ability to not only continue growing my financial knowledge but continue sharing it with my students,” said Mr. Welty.

Mr. Welty, who is a 2014 graduate of Brophy, will begin the University of Arizona master’s program next semester. He holds a B.A. in government and international politics from George Mason University and an M.A. in social studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He returned to Brophy to teach in 2019 and also oversees Brophy’s Speech and Debate program.

The topic of financial literacy and debt will be front and center at Brophy this year, with the annual Summit on Human Dignity addressing this topic. The two-week Summit will be Feb. 26 through March 7, 2024.
