Two podium finishes helped the Brophy College Prep track and field team complete the inaugural AIA Open Track and Field Championships in seventh with 21 points. Sophomore Darius Alberty placed fifth in the javelin at 171-3 and the 4x100-meter relay clocked a 41.53 for the second consecutive day to finish sixth.
“The relays were really exciting and the 4x100 really culminated the efforts for the team,” said Head Coach Bill Kalkman. “There are no individuals in the relay in the sense they were excited to be here and go after that school record. The guys came here to compete and represent the school and themselves. They did a nice job.”
Alberty opened the day for the Broncos in the javelin. He improved on his first three throws and hit a 171-3 mark on the third to advance to the final. He did not improve on his last three throws but the distance held for fifth overall. He finished as the top sophomore in the field.
“It was impressive he could repeat his throw over 170 from last week,” said Kalkman.
Senior Zach Loiselle finished his Bronco career with an 11th-place finish in the 1600m.
The 4x100m relay capped the meet for Brophy with an identical 41.53 to their preliminary time, good for sixth overall. Junior Hayes Chambers, junior Ryan De Koning, freshman William De Spong and senior Brennen McHenry had advanced last week with the second-fastest time in school history in the event.
It was the third medal for McHenry, who won the long jump and placed fifth in the high jump on Friday.
“What a tremendous jump for Brennen at 24-10.25 to win the long jump”, said Kalkman. “It is one of the top jumps in the nation and he had to do that in the finals. With more pressure on the big jump, he has consistently come up with the big jump. He did it again. He has been the best jumper in Arizona for two years in a row.”
