McHenry Wins Open Long Jump, Finishes Fifth in High Jump

Senior Brennen McHenry won the long jump with one of the top marks in the country and finished fifth in the high jump to lead Brophy on the opening day of the AIA Open Arizona State Track and Field Championships at Mesa Community College. Brophy is tied for first with 14 points with Rincon University out of Tucson after the first day of competition.
McHenry, who won the Division I title last week with a jump of 23-0.5, advanced to the finals with a mark of 22-8 before two fouls, but he unleashed the winning jump with his fourth attempt in the competition at 24-10.5. It broke his own school record (24-4) and is the fourth-best jump in the nation this season.
Freshman Rylan Umphrey finished 16th in the long jump at 20-11 and was the top freshman in the state.
McHenry then moved on to the high jump where he finished fifth at 6-6. Teammate Hayes Chambers also was also in the high jump but did not record a clearance. 
McHenry joined junior Ryan De Koning, sophomore William DeSpong, and Chambers in the 4x100-meter relay, qualifying sixth overall in 41.53. 
Junior Luca Cannizzo was 14th in the 400 meters in 50.29 and did not advance to Saturday’s finals. He joined teammates junior Connor Brown, senior Jordan Knight, and junior Christian Honan in the 4x400m relay, placing 15th in 3:26.37.
On Saturday, sophomore Darius Alberty will compete in the javelin at 3:30 p.m., while senior Zach Loiselle will run in the 1600-meter final at 6:40 p.m. The 4x100m relay final will be at 6:45 p.m.
