Volleyball Advances to State Semifinals

Senior Teddy Churchill had 10 kills to lead Brophy College Prep to a 3-0 win over Mesa in the quarterfinal round of the AIA 6A Conference playoffs. The set scores were 25-11, 25-16 and 25-16.

“The guys executed our game plan against their unorthodox offense and we were able to take out their best hitter and what they wanted to do,” said Head Coach Tony Oldani. “We had big games from Teddy, Connor (Oldani), Patrick (Oldani), and Benjamin Cugno again. It was a great team effort from everyone and I am  proud of the way we executed.”

Connor Oldani led the team with 12 kills. Churchill recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs to go with four blocks. Patrick Oldani had 41 assists without an error.

“We were really focused on locking down their middles and being engaged on defense,” said Churchill. “I think we did that very well, especially on scramble plays.”

Coach Oldani highlighted the play of Benjamin Cugno, who had nine kills in the contest.

“Cugno stepped into a role that all season long he has been great at,” said Oldani. “There is no greater ability than availability. Every time he has been called upon, he has been great for us.”

Brophy (37-8) advances to take on No. 2 seed Perry on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Mountain View, Mesa upset No. 4 Sandra Dy O’Connor and will travel to No. 1 Highland in the second semifinal. Brophy opened the playoffs with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-20, 25-19) over Mountain Ridge on May 5.

“Against Perry, the benefit is we are playing with house money,” said Oldani. “We are going against a team that beat us three times. We know we can play loose. We got a little closer every time we played team. We have a lot of respect for their guys and they have respect for us. It will be a fun match.”
