Tennis Falls to Desert Mountain in State Finals

The No. 1 seeded Brophy tennis team’s run to a second consecutive AIA Division I State Championship ended with a 5-1 loss to No. 3 seed Desert Mountain on May 6 at Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.

“Today, Desert Mountain played really well,” said Head Coach Eric Chalmers ‘10. “They had good energy from the jump, they were making shots and we were missing shots we usually make. Tennis is a game played on the margins. If you don’t make the shots, it is tough to win.”

The loss ended an in-state winning streak for the program at 35 matches dating to a loss to Desert Mountain in the 2021 state final. The Broncos went undefeated and defeated Chaparral in the final in 2022.

“We are a young team with a bunch of sophomores,” said Chalmers. “We are going to be competing for years to come. It told the team it is remembering this moment and not wanting to repeat it again.”

Brophy opened the match by earning the point at No. 4 singles when sophomore Naren Gudavalli posted a 6-0, 6-1 win. He finished his season with a 9-1 single mark in AIA play.

“Naran played great,” said Chalmers. “From the beginning of the season to now, he is the most improved player on the team. He is really playing well.”

Desert Mountain took the lead with wins at No. 2 and 3 singles for a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Logan Phillips lost to Jeronimo Lede 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, while junior Andre Johnson lost to Daniel Yuke 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Senior Hadley Kukla battled in a three-set loss at No. 1 singles. He won the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-6 before falling 6-0, 10-3 as Desert Mountain took a 4-1 lead.

Austin Kos was the last match on the court at No. 6. He won the opening set over Yuki Matsui before dropping the second 6-4 and the third set tiebreak 10-5 to give Desert Mountain the decisive point.

High school tennis includes six singles and three doubles matches with the winner needing five points to take the match.
