Brophy senior golfer Charlie Palmer has made a commitment to attend Princeton University in the fall and play golf for the Tiger program.
“I am excited about the people I am going to meet,” said Palmer. “I love the coach and he was amazing on my visit. I felt really good about everything.”
Palmer finished off his senior season with an AIA Division State Team Championship, helping the Broncos to a record-breaking performance in winning the state title. Palmer was second overall at the state tournament with rounds of 65 and 67 to earn all-state honors. He also was an All-Premier Region first-team selection and named to the All-Arizona team by the Arizona Republic for the second consecutive year.
He will play for Will Green, who is in his 24th year as J. Stuart Francis '74 Head Coach of Men's Golf. He has led the Tigers to eight Ivy titles and eight NCAA appearances, including one individual NCAA bid, and coached 36 All-Ivy League honorees through the 2022 season.
Palmer is joining a talented recruiting class and looking forward to playing for Coach Green.
“He has so much experience with over 20 years at Princeton,” said Palmer, who plans to study finance. “His personality meshes well with mine. My parents are excited to pass me over to him.”
Palmer, who has a 4.503 weighted GPA entering his final semester, was named a Rolex Scholastic Junior All-American this year. He is the first student-athlete from Brophy to earn the award in school history and earned an invitation to the Rolex Tournament of Champions.
“My grades have always been important to me,” said Palmer. “It is cool that I was recognized for both being good in the classroom and my sport. It also got me into one of the biggest tournaments of the year.”
He was also a three-time Sports360AZ All-Academic selection and was the Brophy nominee for the AIA AScholar Athlete of the Year Award.
“All the schools I considered were among the top academic schools,” said Palmer, who considered Princeton, Yale, Santa Clara, and Pepperdine. “My goal is to play golf professionally but I know how difficult it is to make it. I want to have a really good backup option for the rest of my life.”
Palmer finishes his career as a four-time state championship participant, helping the Broncos to the title in 2022 and three runner-up finishes in 2019-21. He finished tied for 16th as a freshman, 10th as a sophomore, and fifth as a junior. He was also a two-time All-Arizona selection, three-time all-state honoree, and two-time All-Premier Region choice.
“His game and confidence improved each year and he really grew and developed into a strong leader during his junior and senior years,” said Head Coach Jon Shores. “Even more impressive than all of his accomplishments on the golf course, Charlie is one of the brightest and smartest players I have ever coached. Throughout his 4 years, he has excelled in many honors and AP classes, managing the demands of the rigorous class load with time commitments to a varsity sport.”
Palmer will remember his time on the Brophy teams and has great memories.
“The chemistry on the team was the best we’ve had during my time at Brophy,” said Palmer of the 2022 Broncos. “I will remember the last day at the state tournament. I hit the final shot on 18 to four feet and birdied the final hole. I was reminiscing on that last green to my first high school match when I chipped in for a birdie on my first hole. I birdied the first and last holes of my high school record.”
He will play a competitive schedule over the next few months to prepare for college including the Dustin Johnson World Junior (March), The Heather Farr, and British Junior in Scotland while participating in qualifying for the U.S. Junior and US Amateur.
