Tennis Posts Strong Finish at National All-American Tournament
The Brophy tennis team placed 11th out of 16 teams at the 22nd annual National High School Tennis All-American Tournament in Newport Beach, Calif. The Broncos went 2-2 on the weekend with wins over Calabasas (Calif.) and Brunswick (Conn.)
The Broncos lost to Corona del Mar 8-0 in the opener before rebounding with a 6-2 win over Brunswick (Conn.). Brophy earned wins by No. 1 Ryan Zerbib, No. 2 Hadley Kukla, No. 4 by Logan Phillips and No. 5 Andrew Johnson. Zerbib/Kukla combined for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Kentaro Akiyoshi and Phillips posted a 6-1 win at No. 2.
On Saturday, the Broncos tied both Palisades (Calif.) and Clasbasas (Calif.) 4-4 with the match coming down to a total games tiebreaker. Brophy lost to Palisades 38-37, while defeating Calabasas 32-31 in total games.
Phillips won both his matches on Saturday at No. 4 singles, while Johnson, Kukla and Akiyosia split two singles matches.
