Lucas Franz has been a three-year varsity athlete and a four-year member of the program. He is hitting .385 for the season and has a hit in four of the last five games. He enjoys spending time with friends and being outside.
How is your senior season going?
“It is going well. I started the season hitting ninth and now I am hitting second. It is a testament to the work I am putting in. Our team’s success has not been there but I feel like we are going to pick it up.”
What do you love about catching?
“I like that you are in every play and involved all the time. It makes you locked in the game.”
How does catching make you a better pitcher?
“I throw the ball a lot and hit a target.”
Do you have a favorite between the two?
“Definitely I prefer catching. It is less stressful and I am better at catching than pitching.”
What is the key to getting back on the winning track?
“We have to stop hitting the ball in the air so much. There are no bad hops in the air. We need everything to click. Right now, when our pitching is off, our hitting is on. When our hitting is off, our pitching is on. We need everything to click.”
What are your goals for playing baseball in college?
“I would love to play at GCU. If that does not work out, maybe junior college.”
How have you improved as a player and person since freshman year?
“As a player, I have become a better hitter. I was a defensive player. My arms strength has improved and I am getting bigger. As a person, I have gotten more sure in myself with my confidence. I have learned how to read people more and be more empathetic.”
What is a fun fact about you on the back of your baseball card?
“I eat an avocado every day. Slice into four and eat it with dinner.”
What is your favorite Coach Garcia quote?
“A lot of his lessons apply to both baseball and life. I feel like all of his stories are very important and get you on the road to being a better man with character.”
