Wrestling Qualifies Five for State Championships, Wins Two Sectional Titles

The Brophy wrestling team finished fourth at the AIA Division 1 Section IV meet and qualified five wrestlers for the AIA State Championships this week at Arizona Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum.

The Brophy qualifiers included sectional champions senior David Sweetman at 285 and freshman Adam Angulo at 132, while Sean Kennedy (126), Woody Bayless (144) and Jackson Sweetman (175) advanced with fourth-place finishes.

Sweetman defeated Eli Barta of Mesa Mountain View by fall (0:35) in the final. He advanced by forfeit in the semifinals and opened with a win by fall (0:15) over Donovan Zimmerman of Chaparral. Angulo defeated Luc Cruz- Bastian (Pinnacle) by decision 9-2.

Junior Sean Kennedy reached the semifinals of the 126 main draw. Still, he recovered to win his consolation semifinal match by 11-7 decision before falling in the third-place match. Junior Woody Bayless was fourth at 144 after losing in the third-place match by 9-8 decision. Sophomore Jackson Sweetman recorded a fall in the consolation semifinal before losing in the third-place consolation match.
