Ian Hagan has been playing soccer since he was six years old with Tempo soccer in Sioux Falls, S.D. His family moved to Arizona in fifth grade. He has been playing varsity soccer for Brophy for three years. He has one younger brother, Eli. He is one of the captains for the team this season.
What has it meant to you to play soccer at Brophy?
“It has been amazing. The friendships I have made on the team are amazing and the memories are fun. It is a vice. When you step on the field, the worries of Brophy, college, and homework go away. You get 60 minutes to two hours of peace.”
What did it mean to be selected as a captain?
“I was hoping to be a captain because I have been on the team for so long and I try to hold myself to a high standard. To be recognized as a leader meant a lot because of the work I have done.”
What did you learn from the loss at Mesa?
“Our coach said something before the game that really stuck with me. He said we were dancing the line between arrogance and confidence. We were getting a little lazy at practice because we were undefeated. It was a good wake-up call that anyone can win on any day. It is important to focus on the small things and understand if we are going to win state no team is going to hand it to us. We are going to have to work for it.”
What are your goals for the second half of the season?
“The goals are to up the intensity in training and do a little more activities outside the field with the team, building up our relationship and confidence. We need to stay positive in rough times and enjoy the moment.”
What is your connection with your brother?
“We are really close. He is moving to Spain at the end of the month. He is really good at soccer and he is going to live over there. I’ll miss him a lot. He is joining a professional academy.”
What are your college plans?
“I am hoping to get into the Naval Academy. That is my No. 1 choice. I have the opportunity to play soccer at the Coast Guard Academy. I got accepted there. If that doesn’t work out my goal is to go somewhere that will set me up for success. Wherever that will be I hope to look back in 10 years knowing I made the right decisions.”
What is attractive to you about the Navy?
“On the military side of it, I would love to do Special Forces or be a pilot. If the military aspect doesn’t do it, I will do the five years of service and want to do something in security in the private sector or something in regard to the ocean. I love the water and being near the coast.”
