Brophy Awarded $1 Million Grant by Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust

PHOENIX, Sept. 13, 2021—Today, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust announced its Now Is the Moment Grants Commemoration which includes a $1 million grant to Brophy College Preparatory. In all, the Trust awarded $123 million to 71 “invaluable organizations in our community.”

In a letter to Brophy president, Ms. Adria Renke, Piper Trust’s board wrote, “Trustees selected Brophy College Preparatory for a grant of $1,000,000 restricted to scholarships. Please accept this with our deepest gratitude for all you continue to accomplish in the midst of ambiguous times. We want to recognize the extraordinary and pivotal role you and your organization play in our community.”

The Trust noted that despite a tumultuous year due to the global health crisis caused by COVID-19, many with large investments in the stock market experienced tremendous growth in the value of their holdings. Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust’s endowment grew by $123 million during the 15 months following the onset of the pandemic and the Trustees, as stewards of the Trust’s founder, Virginia Galvin Piper, felt compelled to share all of the earnings with the community in one swift action.

President Renke comments, “We are deeply grateful to Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. This gift reinforces our Jesuit mission of educating every qualified young man, regardless of his family’s financial circumstances. Our financial aid budget this year is $5.6 million, the most of any private school in the Valley. One life changed because of a Brophy education will most certainly change others. Today’s grant will multiply itself many times over in lives changed for the better.”

Brophy College Preparatory was founded in 1928 by Mrs. William Henry Brophy as Arizona’s first Catholic, Jesuit high school. Brophy now includes Loyola Academy, an on-campus, sixth-through-eighth-grade middle school for academically promising students with substantial financial need. Brophy’s total enrollment for 2021-22 is approximately 1400 young men, with almost 400 students receiving need-verified financial aid.
