Nuestro Penqueños Hermanos USA (NPH USA) recently presented Brophy with the first ever NPH USA La Familia Award. This award is to recognize those who have made a significant impact in the lives of the children who NPH USA serves.

Students and faculty at Brophy College Prep have made many trips over the years, to the NPH home in Guatamala. Many have returned as volunteers, not only to Guatemala, but also to some of the other NPH homes in the nine countries where NPH works. In conferring the award, NPH said, "Brophy has truly lived up to their mission of Men for Others.

Thirteen of Brophy's seniors have earned the distinction of 2017 National Merit Semifinalists. They are Will Alpert, Anthony Cardellini, Carter Clelland, Zephan Enciso, Ian Gray, Brandon Hulston, Luke Miller, Brendan Morey, Luke Stegmayer, Ryan Teetsel, Brandon Theodorou, Michael Travis, and Jack Venberg.

Update:

Devon Allen '13 made it to the finals of the 110 meter hurdles and finished in fifth place with a time of 13.31. Allen clocked his personal best of 13.03 at the Olympic Trials, a time that would have earned him a gold medal, if he had been able to duplicate it. He will return to Oregon and get ready to join his team for the football season. Brophy is proud of Devon Allen '13, a great sportsman and great competitor.

Devon Allen '13 has had a big year. He achieved NCAA All-American status (for the second time) with a first-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles, then won the same event at the Olympic Trials with the second fastest time in the world this year of 13.03. He'll compete with Team U.S.A. in Rio with his event scheduled for Monday, August 15 (first round) and Tuesday, August 16 (semifinals and final).

Allen attends the University of Oregon where he runs track and plays football for the Ducks. The New York Times featured him in a story on athletes who run track and play football, and his story has been featured on a number of sports pages. He told AZCentral, "My advantage is being fast...with me being a little younger and kind of new to hurdles, I'm trying to catch up as well as I can to the hurdle technique."

Brandon Hulston '17 spent the past six weeks studying Mandarin in China. Hulston was awarded a scholarship thorugh the U.S. Department of State's National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y).

Annually, approximately 600 students nationally are selected through a competitive application process. "I was excited when I found out because I knew I had beat out a lot of other smart, competitive kids. It's an honor." Hulston told the Arcadia News.

The Milwaukee Brewers signed Chad McClanahan '16, an 11th-round draft pick, to a $1.2 million deal that gives the club a solid infielder with great hitting potential. McClanahan, a top student-athlete, was selected to last season's All USA-Arizona and All-State teams.

Baseball head coach Tom Succow says, "Chad McClanahan is one of the most talented players whom I have ever coached. Chad's willingness to learn, his coachability, and his competitive nature will allow him to succeed at the professional level. Under a microscope all year, Chad excelled as one of the top players in the state of Arizona. The Milwaukee Brewers are fortunate to draft and sign this outstanding athlete."

Brophy's crew program almost didn't get off the ground this past season, or in this case, into the water. The team trains at Tempe Town Lake and last fall the lake was drained, leaving them no place to go. 

They maintained their focus, working on stationery rowers and strengthening equipment, and were able to get back into the water in May, just in time for the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Regatta in Ohio. Despite having had limited time on water, Brophy's heavyweight quad finished first, and the lightweight quad came in third.

With renewed confidence, they entered this summer's U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Princeton, N.J. - the pinnacle of youth crew competition. The heavyweight quad of Costa Theodore '16, Michael Darby '16, Jon Carr '17, and Kade Hawkins '17 edged into third in the final seconds of the race, taking the bronze medal.

Theodore is now rowing for Cornell, and Darby rows for the University of San Diego.
