Golfer Asher Nelson Commits to Oklahoma State
Senior golfer and 2026 AIA Division I champion Asher Nelson has committed to play for and attend Oklahoma State University.
“I'm super grateful to all the schools I contacted and visited,” said Nelson. “Oklahoma State Golf has made a name for itself with its great history and record of producing alumni on the PGA Tour.”
He will play under head coach Alan Bratton. This past year, OSU won four overall titles and produced nine individual medalists. Bratton was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the third time overall. The Cowboys won the Big 12 crown and would go on to reach the semifinals of match play at the NCAA Championship, marking the 59th top-five finish in program history at the event.
“The coaches are awesome, and the whole team dynamic is great,” said Nelson. “When I visited, it was like nothing I'd seen before at other schools. The golf course they practice on is private. I could easily envision myself out there. And the course was amazing. It felt like there was nowhere else I'd rather be. You could really feel the energy around the campus, and it was awesome.”
Nelson capped his career last week by earning medalist honors at the AIA Division I State Championships with a 10-under-par 134 after a final-round 65. It was his best career finish at the state tournament after tying for 2nd in 2025 and tying for fifth in 2024.
“Asher is one of the most naturally gifted athletes our golf program has ever seen,” said Head Coach Jon Shores. “Over the years, he has paired that raw talent with relentless, dedicated training, developing into one of the top junior golfers in the state. Beyond his performance on the course, Asher brings an infectious, positive energy to practice and tournaments every single day—creating an environment where his teammates thrive. Oklahoma State is gaining an exceptional athlete, an elite competitor, and a selfless team leader.”
Nelson has been a three-time Sports360 AZ All-Academic selection, an All-Arizona choice in 2025 and an honorable mention in 2024 by the Arizona Republic, and a two-time All-Central Region selection. He started Scoring 4 Kids Charity for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and has completed three years of community service.
His success on the golf course was well earned after he dedicated himself to the game. He played football and lacrosse growing up.
“I had no clue this is where I would end up,” said Nelson. “I played football and lacrosse my whole life, and then I took up golf during COVID-19, and then I kind of fell in love with it and competing.”
Breaking an ankle playing football helped him realize how much he missed golf
“The second I got back with my golf clubs, I didn't ever want to stop,” recalled Nelson. “I tried out for the golf team freshman year, made it, and then played in all the tournaments as a freshman. Being on the team with Tyler (Spielman), Henry (Dall), and Dylan (Boenning) as a freshman was so much fun and a great experience. They set the standard for Brophy golf.”
Now he is part of the standard, joining Spielman as a state champion and helping the team win three consecutive state championships.
“The team always tries to come together during state, and we all turn it on at the right moments,” Nelson predicted last week. “We played really solid in the past, so the goal is definitely three state championships.”
Goals accomplished.
Nelson will participate in the Brophy Collegiate Commitment Ceremony on Nov. 11.
