Brophy Embraces the Possibilities and Challenges of AI
What does it mean to attend school in a world where artificial intelligence is increasingly present in learning, business, and creative processes? As a Jesuit, Catholic community, our challenge is to discern how AI can enhance our pursuit of truth, wisdom, and the greater good, while upholding human dignity, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility. AI holds extraordinary potential for research, writing, and problem-solving, yet it carries clear risks of plagiarism and disinformation. This dichotomy is familiar on our campus. Jesuit education has always pushed students to the frontiers of learning—viewing technology not as an evil to be avoided or a distraction to be controlled, but as an evolving tool to enhance creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
Rather than block AI, we actively incorporate it into classroom discussions to explore its possibilities while examining the ethics, inequities, and risks of computer-generated content. Technology is already in our students’ hands, making it essential to teach and assess learning in new ways. In the short term, we promote effective classroom uses alongside a deep culture of academic integrity. Students can expect more in-class writing workshops, updated pedagogy that emphasizes authentic demonstrations of understanding, and continued reliance on integrity tools like Turnitin and Respondus LockDown Browser.
Looking forward, Brophy administrators and faculty will continue to consult students, parents, educational leaders, and technology experts to craft guidelines that align with our Ignatian ideals. Generative AI can streamline routine tasks, freeing time and energy for students to reinvest in deeper engagement and original thought. As these platforms rapidly evolve, we remain committed to providing robust professional development for our faculty and setting clear expectations for our students. Above all, we embrace our responsibility to teach young men how to use these powerful tools ethically, effectively, and ultimately, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam—for the greater glory of God.
| Academic Integrity and AI Transparency |
| In the Spring of 2024 we published progressive, bold AI Guidelines for Academic Integrity using our mission and academic ethics philosophy as a beacon. The guidelines—intentionally built by students and faculty—serve as clarity and direction as we incorporate AI into learning and classroom conversations, explore the myriad new possibilities AI creates, and examine the ethics, inequities, and risks of computer-generated content. Our guidelines are grounded in the principle of human ownership and direction. Students remain the authors of their own thinking, using AI as a tool to support a process they control rather than as a substitute that generates the work itself. This distinction between assistive and generative use is central to preserving creativity and critical thinking as core outcomes of a Brophy education. |
