Baseball’s Dre Ethier Commits to the University of Miami
Brophy senior Dre Ethier has committed to play baseball and attend the University of Miami. He joins a Hurricane program that is among college baseball’s elite, with 25 College World Series appearances, four national championships (1982, 1985, 1999, 2001), and a record 44 consecutive years advancing to the NCAA regionals.
“It's pretty incredible, and I'm honored to commit to Miami,” said Ethier. “It's a very good program, not just the athletics, but also an academic school, and that was something I was looking for. It's really student-athlete, and the history of that place and location is incredible. You can’t ask for anything else.”
He will play for J.D. Arteaga, who was named the 10th head coach in Miami baseball history ahead of the 2024 season, making 2027 his fourth year leading the Hurricanes.
“The coaches, teachers, and professors at the school all really know what they're doing and really invest in you and want you to succeed,” said Ethier. “I get to play for such an awesome school and get to grow close with my peers and try to get to Omaha.”
Either will play his fourth varsity season for the Broncos in the spring.
“It means a lot,” said Ethier. “Brophy baseball has definitely got me through. They always push me to do well in the classroom so I can keep having fun on the field every day. It's just a fun group of guys and coaches working hard together towards one goal. I haven’t felt more connected to a team than I have felt this year.”
Ethier was an All-Central Region second-team selection as a junior. Prep Baseball Report lists him among the nation's top recruits at No. 33 at shortstop. He hit .347 as a junior, with a team-best 33 hits, while driving in 25 runs and scoring 22.
“Dre is one of the most dynamic players I've had the opportunity to coach,” said Head Coach Josh Garcia ‘07. “He has the ability to impact a game in so many different ways, whether it's with his glove, his athleticism, his aggressiveness on the bases, or his understanding of the game. He is on pace to become one of the best defensive shortstops in Brophy's rich history at the position.”
“His baseball IQ is among the best I've coached, and there have been numerous games where his instincts and decision-making have directly impacted our success. Beyond his ability, Dre brings contagious energy and enthusiasm. He has a unique combination of talent, personality, and competitiveness that will make him a great addition to the University of Miami.”
Ethier is the son of former MLB player Andre Either, who had a 12-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His mom, Maggie, is a legendary former ASU gymnast who set program records by scoring nine perfect 10.0s during her collegiate career. They are both in the ASU Sports Hall of Fame.
He will play with his younger brother Rett this season.
“We are just trying to support each other and do anything we can to take this program to the next level,” said Ethier.
He is ready to have a big senior season.
“I want to stay consistent more and do what I can to help lead the team in any way I can,” said Ethier. “I want to be that guy that the team can rely on or count on when we’re tied or down late in a game.”
Ethier will participate in the Brophy Collegiate Commitment Ceremony on Nov. 11.
